Feeding Our neighbors continues to grow and thrive…
October 2023 marked one year of serving food to our neighbors in the Zeeland area through the ministry of Feeding Our Neighbors (FON). From the beginning, we have strongly felt the call to reduce food insecurity by delivering a delicious and nutritious meal twice a month. The volunteer and financial resources of Second Reformed have been, and continue to be, vital to our ministry. Over the past months, we have been joined by a gifted and enthusiastic group of First Reformed Church Zeeland members. We have loved working together making and delivering food while developing a strong sense of community and common purpose.
Our ministry is growing in some beautiful ways. The number of meals we deliver to Maple Parks Estates and to Logan Estates has not changed much. This fall, we added Haven Huis, a community of affordable apartments in Zeeland, to our meal rotation. FON also recently opened a monthly food pantry in cooperation with Harvest Stand Ministries – and generously supported by Zeeland Classis – in Maple Parks Estates, another chance to reduce area food insecurity.
Almost all our food is “rescued,” meaning that it would end up in a landfill if we did not prepare and serve it to our neighbors. We have developed a close working relationship with Community Action House and Hungry For Christ in Hamilton.
